Fahrenheit to Celsius formula
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
Unlike length or mass conversions, temperature requires both a scale factor and an offset, because 0°C and 0°F are different temperatures. This also means temperature differences convert differently from temperature values: a rise of 10°C is a rise of 18°F, not 50°F.
The mental shortcut: subtract 30 and halve it. 70°F → 40 → 20°C, against an exact 21.1°C.
Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion table
| Fahrenheit | Celsius | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| -40°F | -40°C | Extreme cold |
| 0°F | -17.8°C | Severe winter |
| 32°F | 0°C | Freezing |
| 50°F | 10°C | Cold |
| 68°F | 20°C | Comfortable |
| 80°F | 26.7°C | Warm |
| 98.6°F | 37°C | Hot |
| 212°F | 100°C | Boiling |
Why do the scales differ at all?
Devised by Daniel Fahrenheit in 1724. Water freezes at 32° and boils at 212°. Used for weather in the United States and, informally, in the UK for hot summer days.
Defined by the freezing (0°) and boiling (100°) points of water at standard pressure. Used for weather everywhere except the United States.
−40 is the one temperature where the two scales agree, which is a consequence of their different scale factors and offsets intersecting at that point.
Frequently asked questions
What is 68°F in Celsius?
68°F is 20°C — a mild room temperature.
What is normal body temperature?
37°C, or 98.6°F. The 98.6 figure comes from a 19th-century study; more recent research puts the average slightly lower, around 36.6°C or 97.9°F, and it varies by time of day and by person.
At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal?
−40. It is the only point where the two scales give the same number, which is why −40 degrees needs no unit stated.
Which countries use Fahrenheit?
The United States, its territories, the Cayman Islands, Liberia and a few others. The UK uses Celsius officially but Fahrenheit still appears informally in tabloid weather reporting for hot days.
How do I convert a temperature difference?
Use only the scale factor, not the offset. A change of 1°C is a change of 1.8°F. Applying the +32 to a difference is a common error.
