Net Worth Calculator

Assets minus liabilities, with a liquid-versus-total split.

What it does. Net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. Its value is not the number but the direction — measured the same way once or twice a year, it shows whether the position is improving in a way income alone never reveals.

How to use Net Worth Calculator

  1. List assets, separating liquid from illiquid.
  2. List every liability including the ones you forget.
  3. Read net worth and the liquidity split.

Liquid net worth is the more useful number

Total net worth includes your home and pension. Neither can be spent this month, and for most households they are the majority of the total.

Liquid net worth — cash and accessible investments minus short-term debt — is what determines whether a bad month is an inconvenience or a crisis.

A household with £400,000 of net worth that is entirely home equity and pension is asset-rich and fragile. One with £80,000 of which £30,000 is accessible is poorer and considerably more resilient.

The liabilities people forget

  • Car finance and PCP, which often is not thought of as debt.
  • Buy-now-pay-later balances, spread across several providers.
  • Tax owed but not yet paid, particularly for the self-employed.
  • Student loans, which behave differently from other debt but are still owed.
  • Money owed to family, which is real regardless of the paperwork.

The self-employed tax one is the most common cause of an overstated net worth. Money in the account earmarked for a January tax bill is not an asset; it is a liability sitting in an asset account.

What to do with the number

Measure it consistently and infrequently. Twice a year is plenty, and using the same method each time matters far more than the precision of any single valuation.

A rough house value used consistently tells you more about direction than a precise one used once.

Resist comparing it to anyone else’s. Net worth is dominated by age, housing market and inheritance — none of which reflect decisions you made. The only useful comparison is against your own figure last year.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate net worth?

Total everything you own, subtract everything you owe. The useful refinement is splitting assets into liquid and illiquid, because a home and a pension cannot be spent this month.

Should I include my home?

In total net worth yes, in liquid net worth no. For most households the home is the majority of the total and none of the accessible part, which is why the split matters more than the headline.

What liabilities do people forget?

Car finance, buy-now-pay-later balances, and — for the self-employed — tax owed but not yet paid. Money set aside for a tax bill is a liability sitting in an asset account.

How often should I calculate it?

Twice a year. Consistency of method matters far more than precision — a rough house value used the same way each time shows direction better than a precise one used once.

Is my net worth good for my age?

That comparison is not worth much. Net worth is dominated by age, housing market and inheritance rather than decisions. The only useful comparison is against your own figure last year.
